Cosmetic Or Insurance Procedure

This is not an insurance covered case.

Office Consultation And Preparation

During your initial consultation we will discuss all of the aspects of the operation and how it relates to you. We will have a second visit that is the pre-operative visit where I will answer all of your final questions, write the prescriptions for the medicines you will need after the surgery and you will do your pre-operative visit at the hospital.

The Operation

The operation is done as an outpatient procedure or day-surgery at Decatur Morgan Hospital using general anesthesia.  It is done in the main operating rooms at Decatur Morgan Hospital and takes 1 hour to perform.  We do the operation in the morning and you will get discharged to home in the afternoon or the early evening.  You will go home with a special protective dressing over the nipple to protect it as it heals.

Postoperative Discomfort

All patients are unique and the response to post-operative discomfort is variable, but inverted nipple correction is associated with very little postoperative discomfort.  There might be a slight burning sensation in the nipple.  Most patients take the narcotic medicine for 2 or 3 days and then switch to Tylenol for pain.  Almost all patients feel normal by 3 weeks.

Time Off From Work

For a desk job that does not require any heavy lifting you should expect to be away from work for a few days.   The main problem is hiding the the special nipple protective dressing which protrudes.   Also, you have to keep the repaired nipple dry so you cannot take a complete shower.
For a job that requires physical exertion or heavy lifting you should expect to be away from work for 1 week.   We do not want anything rubbing on and potentially disturbing the nipple protective dressing.

Postoperative Visits To The Office

You will come to the office 5 days after your surgery and you may need someone to drive you to this appointment if you are still on narcotic medications.   At this first postoperative check I will remove the bulky nipple protective dressing.  You will go home with a light gauze dressing over your nipple at this point.   You can take a full shower the evening that you nipple protective dressing is removed.  You will take off your dressing and shower, soapy water will not hurt your nipple, pat yourself dry. You can wear a bra over the light weight gauze dressing.
Your next appointment will be in another 5 days.  At this appointment I will remove the sutures at the base of your nipple.   You can stop wearing a gauze dressing at this point.   The next appointment will be in 2 weeks for a quick check of the healing process.
After that I will see you again in approximately 6 months and then again at 12 months from your surgery and do a final assessment of your correction and get your final opinion on the surgery.  With the technique that I use, I have not yet had a nipple correction fail and invert again.
